To Be Considered ‘Bad-Ass,’ a Product:

  • Must be profoundly useful.
  • Must be fairly priced (or better yet, cheap!) compared to the value it offers the musician.
  • Must be long-lasting, easy to use, transport, clean, etc.
  • Must be personally used by yours truly.

#1) Peak Music Stand

The Peak Music Stand is bad-ass because it’s a fully collapsible, sturdy, solid-backed music stand (think the classic black Manhasset) that’s light-weight, includes a tote bag and is remarkably easy to travel with. I used to keep a Manhasset in the trunk of my car which not only screwed up the trunk space, but was also a pain to carry around with horns, mic, mic stand and cables.

I bought the Peak SM-50 (the tall one) 5 years ago for $50. That’s a depreciated cost of $10 / year and getting lower by the day. I use this stand all the time and it’s got a lot of life left in it.

Just sling the tote bag over your shoulder and go.

#2) Kootek Stand Light

At some point in the future, we may be reading music via electronic mediums exclusively. But before the microwaves and televisions take over, it’s a good idea to keep a stand light close by.

Nobody likes being the guy who’s reading like garbage because they can’t see the music. For that reason alone the Kootek Music Stand Light is bad-ass. But that’s not the only reason. Sitting in the same product category as the better known “Mighty Bright,” the Kootek is equally functional and less than half the cost. Sitting just under $20 this light is the shiz.

The Kootek has 10 scorching LED’s to light the way. And unlike the older two-pronged “alien eye” lights that are dim and break, the Kootek is solid. Not to mention it can be charged via wall socket or USB on your drive to the gig.

Keep it in the trunk and never sweat poor lighting again.
